Abstract:Large-diameter cylindrical structure is a novel type of coastal hydraulic structure which is suitable for soft ground. At present appropriate computational procedure and analysis method for horizontal bearing capacity of such a type of structure are not available yet. In the paper, a series of three-dimensional finite element numerical analyses are carried out for the structures. The effect of strength nonhomogeneity of soft soils on bearing capacity of the structure and foundation is examined. Based on the computational results, two patterns of instability including single-sided and double-sided failure mechanism of the structure and foundation are proposed.
