Abstract:SO3H-functionalized ionic liquids (ILs) were synthesized by using tri-alkylamine and 1, 4-butanesultone as the source. The structures and physical properties of ILs were characterized by means of NMR and TG-DTG. Their catalytic performances in the alkylation of o-cresol with tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) were investigated. The influences of reaction conditions on the catalytic tert-butylation of o-cresol were studied. Meanwhile, the catalytic performance of IL was compared with those of conventional liquid acids and solid acids. The results indicated that with N-(4-sulfo group)butyl-triethylamine-hydrogen sulfate(IL2) as catalyst under optimized reaction conditions of θ=80°C, t=6 h, n(o-Cresol):n(TBA):n(IL2)=1:1:0.2, the conversion of o-cresol and the selectivity of 6-TBC were 80.9% and 44.1%, respectively. The SO3H-functionlized ionic liquid exhibited high catalytic activity, which was better than liquid acid and solid acid.
