Abstract:Based on extensive literature review of rumor studies, this paper summarizes the definition of rumor. By analyzing and compa-ring the mode of information transfer in media evolution, the paper divides rumor studies into three phases:traditional media rumor study, computer mediated rumor study and social media rumor study. By teasing out these three phases, we summarize the factors and motivations facilitating rumor activities and the mechanism of rumor generation and transmission, find the advantages and new methods in the computer mediated situation, and put forward several significant research directions under social media context for future study.
