Abstract:In cold regions, the pile-up of ice before the water intake structure of the nuclear power plant jams the water intake, and affects the normal operation of nuclear power equipment. This paper takes the water intake facilities of nuclear power plants as an example, and takes into account the characteristics of the ice area of the project and the role of wind, flow and other factors. The discrete element method(DEM) of sea ice is established to simulate the pile-up and failure process of sea ice before the structures. The discrete element model consists of regularly arranged spherical particles with parallel bonding models. The influences of the ice average size, ice concentration and the velocity of flow on the process of sea ice pile-up are considered to prejudge the height of sea ice pile-up. The pile-up height increases with the increasing concentration of sea ice and velocity of flow. The average size of sea ice has no significant effect on the pile-up height. Therefore, the numerical simulations by DEM can be adopted to assess and predict the risk of jamming caused by the pile-up of sea ice in the water intakes.
