摘要:This paper examines two English translations of the Chinese classic Shi Ji in America, Records of the Grand Historian by Burton Watson and The Grand Scribe's Records by William H. Nienhauser, Jr., with a view to testing Lefevere's proposal that translation needs to be studied in connection with patronage, ideology and poetics in the context of Chinese English translation. Discrepancies at the textual, linguistic/stylistic and cultural levels are highlighted to account for the influence of different approaches, namely the "literary" vs. the "scholarly", on the translation proper, and to explain the influence of "patronage, ideology and poetics" on translation as particularly seen in these two projects.
