Abstract:A series of poly(4-phenylphthalazinone arylate) s (PPARs) were prepared from 4-[4-(4-carboxyphenoxyl) phenyl]-2-(4-carboxyphenyl) phthalazin-1-one (DHPZ-DA) and 4, 4'-dicarboxydiphenyl ether (DAPE) with 4, 4'-isopropylidendiphenol by solution polycondensation in pyridine at 120 degrees C. These polyarylates have number-average molecular weights of 1,2 x 10(4) similar to 1.7 x 10(4) and relatively narrow molecular weight distribution in the range of 1.93 similar to 2.91. The structures of the obtained polyarylates were confirmed by FTIR and H-1-NMR. These polyarylates showed high glass transition temperatures (T-g), which can be 229 degrees C. The 1% weight loss temperatures of the polyarylates, measured by themogravimetric analysis, were above 400 degrees C in nitrogen,The 10% weight loss temperatures of the polymers were in the range of 462 similar to 490 degrees C in nitrogen, the weight loss peak temperature were in the range of 480 similar to 517 degrees C in nitrogen. These polyarylates are amorphous, and most of them exhibited excellent solubility in a variety of polar aprotic solvents such as pyridine (Py), N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP), tetrahydrofuran (THF), chloroform and N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF). The polyarylates can form transparent, strong and flexible films with tensile strength in the range of 61 similar to 80 MPa, Young's moduli in the range of 0.93 similar to 1.38 GPa, and elongation at break in the range of 13% similar to 18%.
