Abstract:Macro-fiber composite (MFC) has a wide potential application due to its advantages such as large actuation forces and flexibility. But the complex structural arrangement makes it difficulty to build model. The paper develops geometrically nonlinear FE model based on the Reissner-Mindlin hypothesis, using different nonlinear theories like yon Karman nonlinear shell theory and fully geometrically nonlinear shell theory under assumption of moderate and large rotations.Further more the arbitrary piezoelectric fiber orientation is considered, which will influence the deflection response. The models developed for two different kinds of MFC,MFC-d31 and MFC-d33,which are dominated by d31 and d33 effect respectively.First, the model is validated by experiment results of a piezoelectric cantilever beam. Then a macro-fiber composite (MFC) laminated bimorph plate is analyzed and formulated by the geometrically nonlinear FE model.
